Lot Essay

As pointed out by De Jonge (loc.cit.), the present lot is characteristic of Moreelse's portraiture circa 1618-1625; when his sitters become more richly dressed, with the newly fashionable stand-up 'Medici' collar and the sleeves of the dresses are slashed revealing a light underdress with stitched bands. It is to be compared with the portrait of Ermgard Elisabeth van Dorth of 1624 (de Jonge, op.cit., no. 71, pl. IV).
