Lot Essay

These plates, deceptive copies after B.1 and B.2, were probably executed at the time when the original plates were owned by the Paris printer Auguste Jean (d. 1820) and his widow between circa 1810 and 1846. In these editions, generally identified as those of the 'Veuve Jean', impressions from these copies first appear. The originals may have been lost, or were too difficult to rework because of their size. The original plates are dated to circa 1647-52 by Schnackenburg, while Slatkes dates them to circa 1650-2.
