NISHAPUR, NORTH EAST IRAN, OR SAMARKAND, CENTRAL ASIA, 10TH CENTURY
Of wide flat form with slightly raised and sloping rim, the centre with a sgraffito small palmette within a raised circle, in a band of bold spiralling motifs, a band of similar motifs around the rim, all picked out in green with ochre and manganese dotted highlights, the underside unglazed, repaired breaks, very slight restoration
18½in. (47.2cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

Dishes using this technique were found at both Nishapur and Samarkand (Charles K. Wilkinson, Nishapur Pottery of the Early Islamic Period, New York, 1974, no.28, p.63 and pl.p.79; Terres Secrètes de Samarkande, exhibition catalogue, Paris, 1992, nos.115 and 118, pp.88-9). Few examples however achieve the sense of rotational movement seen in the present example.
