Lot Essay

The purpose of figures such as this and bearded man is unclear. In the present case, the small size and humorous aspect raises the possibility that they were created for personal amusement by the potters. A similar even smaller figure of a potter which must have been made for amusement was sold in these Rooms 8 October 1991, lot 197.
