SAFAVID IRAN, 16TH OR EARLY 17TH CENTURY
Painted after the fourteenth century Arab prototype, gouache heightened with gold on buff paper, an Archangel depicted in bold colours with seven lines of black Arabic naskh, probably the opening of a text on astrology collected from various texts by Muhammad ibn Muhammad and titled Ikhtiyar, above, gold, red and blue rule, verso with 22 lines of black Arabic naskh within a border of gold margin and red and blue rule, perhaps from the Aja'ib al-Makhluqat, the two sides orginally stuck together and now peeling apart in some areas
