Each comprising a larger lower drop-shaped panel hinged to an upper roundel, inset with concentric bands of rose-cut diamonds within bright-cut surrounds, wirework gallery around the reverse of the sides, the body open, the flat reverse with pierced scrolling openwork designs, the lower panel hinged to reveal the interior, attachment loop above

Lot Essay

The hinged panels at the back of some of these earrings were to hold scent further to embellish the wearer to the senses. A pair of earrings with enamelled hinged backs was exhibited in Paris (Maroc, les trésors du royaume, Paris, 1999, no.322, p.187).
