Lot Essay

The present painting is likely to date to the 1640s. Lely trained under Frans Pieter de Grebber at the Guild of St Luke in Haarlem, before moving to London in 1643. The present picture is characteristic of the subject paintings that Lely executed early in his career, before turning increasingly to portraiture. He often re-used motifs in these subject paintings; the detail of the lady's arm stroking a dog in this painting, for example, also appears in Lely's Concert of circa 1640 to 1649 (Courtauld Gallery of Art, London).
