Lot Essay

We are grateful to Dr. Wolfgang Schulz for noting that this previously unrecorded painting is by far the largest of Saftleven's work in 1643. The Schloss was built in the 11th century and has remained in the possession of the Reifferscheidt family since 1395, and is generally acknowledged as one of the most important moated castles of the Rheinland. The main house was given its Baroque appearance between 1656-63.
