Lot Essay

A slightly larger version, on panel, of the composition with a villa beyond is in the Moratilla Collection, Paris (A. Morassi, Guardi, Venice, 1973, I, p. 493, no. 993: II, fig. 876): that picture includes a doorway in the wall on the right and has different figures. A horizontal version with the composition extended to the right is in the E. Hamill Collection, Chicago (ibid., p. 492, no. 987; II fig. 870). Dario Succi dates this pair of pictures to circa 1790.
