Lot Essay

This portrait was executed in London during Liotard's second English sojourn. It relates to a series of portraits commissioned by Liotard's friend, the third Earl of Bessborough, and in particular, to that of the Honorable Henrietta-Maria Phipps, later Viscountess Dillon (Mulgrave Castle, Marquis of Normanby Collection). The present portrait may well depict one of her brothers: Constantine, later second Lord Mulgrave; Charles; or Henry, later first Earl of Mulgrave.
