Around the time this image was made, and in conjunction with a group exhibition at The Photo League in New York, U.S. Camera wrote: 'Lisette Model's penetrating photographs strip affections and baubles from the wealthy, make no pretence of hiding the misery of the poor. Some of her feelings constantly come through the mechanical devices of photography, to make her pictures as personal as spoken words.' (Lisette Model, The National Gallery of Canada, 1990, p. 95)
