Lot Essay

(1) As Sumowski (op.cit.) points out this may be compared to portraits of the Van Ruyt couple in the collection of the Koninklijk Oudheidkundig Genootschap, Amsterdam, dated 1670 (op.cit., nos. 1553-4), the signatures of which likewise indicate the artist's profession. The present lot would seem to be related to the portrait of a woman dated 1670 of comparable size and technique with the same background in reverse (Sumowski, op.cit., no. 1552), thus possibly forming a pair with the present lot.
