Lot Essay

The term 'Barleycorn' typically denotes playing sets with a husk decoration, usually in bands around the kings and queens, turned and carved generally in bone throughout the 19th century. See Michael Mark, British Chess Sets, V&A and Chess Collectors International, 1986, exhibit 13 & 14.
