Lot Essay

Mildred Rose patented this design during World War II, based on the Staunton pattern, which had become the most popular type since its inception in 1849. Staunton had become the offical tournament style recognised by the World Chess Federation in 1924. This type of set is also known as the 'Rose Chessmen'.
