SECOND HALF 19TH CENTURY
The kings possibly representing Charlemagne, the bishops wearing pointed caps, the knights as rearing horses, rooks as pierced spires, the pawns as countrymen wearing tri-corn hats, stained and one side ebonised
The king -- 4 3/8in. (11.2cm.) high; the pawn -- 3¼in. (8.3cm.) high
