A SOUTH GERMAN CARVED IVORY 'BEARS OF BERNE' CHESS SET
LATE 19TH CENTURY
The kings modelled wearing a crown, the queens each modelled holding a cub, the bishops as walking, the knights carrying cubs, the rooks as bears standing on rocky outcrops, and pawns holding sticks, all mounted on turned waisted bases, one side stained red
The king -- 4in. (10.2cm.) high; the pawn -- 2¾in. (7cm.) high
