A FRENCH POLYCHROME CARVED IVORY BUST TYPE CHESS SET
SECOND HALF 19TH CENTURY
Depicting Napoleon Bonaparte versus Louis XVI, the rooks as turrets, the red side decorated with gilt-heightened Imperial eagles, the blue with silver-heightened fleur-de-lis, fitted in a gilt-tooled leather case
The king -- 3½in. (9cm.) high; the pawn -- 2½in. (6.5cm.) high

Lot Essay

This set bears similarities to two examples sold in The Allen Hofrichter Collection of Chess Sets, Christie's, South Kensington, 20 September 2000, lot 127 and lot 130. The latter set including knights as horses heads carved in a similar style.
