The one side with the the king modelled as Neptune, the queen as a mermaid, the bishops as fish, knights as sea horses, the rooks as octupi, the pawns as addorsed fish, opposing a sixteenth Century style king and queen, the bishops as courtiers, knights as sea-horses, the rooks as shell-fish, pawns as guardsmen
The king -- 4 7/8in. (12.5cm.) high; the pawn -- 2½in. (6.5cm.) high
