The kings with foliate spray finials, the queens with petal knops, both with pierced crowns
The king -- 3 3/8in. (8.5cm.) high; the pawn -- 2in. (5cm.) high

Lot Essay

These sets are often described as Burmese, while similar sets often carved with heads above ball knopped bases are often associated with Macao. It has been established by Michael Mark that both variants are from Canton, for the European market, and probably from the same workshops as straight forward Chinese sets. See Michael Mark, Antique Indian Chess Sets, published Förderkrei Schach-Geschichstsforschung e..v, 1997, page 36.
