A group of clothing comprising: a single-breasted jacket of fine ivory ribbed wool, the sleeves with cuffs and three-button detail, labelled inside Maxwell Vine, 7 Sackville Street, London W.1., with handwritten details Ray Ellington 25-6-80; three white cotton shirts variously labelled: Woods & Brown Ltd, Sackville St. London W1, with RE monogram embroidered in blue silk to the left breast; Frank Foster..London, W1, the left breast similarly monogrammed; Sulka, London; and a shirt of fine yellow wool labelled Turnbull & Asser; and two pairs of bespoke dinner trousers, one of blue and one of black wool, both with identical cord trim to side of legs [unlabelled] -- all purchased by/made for Duke Ellington in the late 1970s early 1980s (7)

Lot Essay

According to the vendor, whilst in London, Duke Ellington stayed with a friend who worked for the Red Cross. On his departure, Ellington left these clothes to be donated to the Red Cross. They were subsequently purchased by the vendor.
