Lot Essay

Erich Heckel's Männerbildnis is among his most important prints and the most iconic images of German Expressionism. In later impressions of this woodcut, the colors are printed in somewhat solid, homogenous planes. The present lot is an example of the transparent and spontaneous color application that is characteristic of earlier impressions, hand-printed by the artist.
