Lot Essay

Paul Sandby was a founder member of the Royal Academy and Society of Artists. Unusually for the period, he specialised in landscape painting, helping to re-establish the genre in Britain as an important aesthetic for the next generation of landscape painters. He often worked in gouache and watercolour, as well as oil.
