Smirke first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1786 and became a member in 1793. He specialised in literary subjects, and also illustrated several books, including David Humes' History of England, 1792.

Pamela, or Virtue Rewarded, an epistolary novel by Samuel Richardson (1689-1761), was first published in two volumes in 1740. It tells the story of Pamela, a maid whose master, Mr. B., makes unwanted advances towards her, but following her continual rejection of his licentiousness, she is eventually rewarded when he finally proposes to marry her.
