Lot Essay

The centre table features a top parquetried with a Grecian-black rosette compartment framed by golden 'Apollo' sunbursts, while its tripod 'altar' pedestal is richly-carved in the Renaissance fashion with its vase baluster guarded by Jupiter's veil-draped eagles.
Such robust furniture executed for the mid-l9th Century great exhibitions was illustrated in the 1870s in G.W. Yapp's, 'Art Industry, Furniture, Upholstery and House Decoration'.
