A SWEDISH PARCEL-GILT, WALNUT AND POLYCHROME-DECORATED MIRROR

The bevelled divided rectangular plate within a stepped beaded frame with rosette to the corners, the pierced cresting enclosing a beaded copper medallion depicting a seated lady holding a dove, above an apron with two foliate scrolls and stiff-leaf pendants, the backboard possibly later, with remains of an old red paper label on back of cresting

Lot Essay

The presence of a beaded oval medallion is particularly interesting and is a recurrent characteristic in mirrors produced during the reign of King Gustav III of Sweden (1746-1792, r.1771). A related mirror was sold anonymously, Bukowski's, Stockholm, 29 November - 1 December 1995, lot 448. A further related mirror was sold anonymously, Christie's, New York, 27 September 2000, lot 456.
