This miniuscule vineyard gives its name to the most famous Domaine in the world, commonly referred to as 'D.R.C.' or, more reverentially, as The Domaine.

This pearl, this small jewel, just under 5 acres, was coveted by a famous collector of jewelry, Madame de Pompadour, but she was out bid by the Prince de Conti, hence the name. The King's minister won against the King's mistress! In 1868 the vineyard passed to the de Villaine family and is still, today, managed by Aubert de Villaine.

It never fails to astonish me that the strips of vines which stretch only a modest number of meters up the very gentle slopes from the outskirts of an equally modest, indeed remarkably rural rambling of village Vosne, are capable of producing wines of such world class quality.

"An almost perfect RC that is essentially a mirror image of the wine in magnum and while its understandably not quite as fresh, its very close. I repeat the note from the magnum here: While the 71 cannot match the virtually unmatched brilliance of the 62s aromatics, it comes close with a somber yet unbelievably complex and perfumed mix of spiced tea, smoked beef jerky and abundant earth followed by incredibly rich, dense, round and velvety full-bodied, beautifully nuanced flavors that completely coat the palate and deliver a stunningly long finish that simply goes on and on. There is massive richness yet the wine sacrifices no detail and the voice of Romanée-Conti comes through clearly as there is breed to burn and yet for all the generosity and velvet, it retains a certain subtle reserve and perfect balance. In sum, this is a great RC that will live for decades in mag format. Note: the 71 from 750 ml format is also showing no signs of advanced age and will continue to drink well for another 20 years though one other recent bottle displayed a hint of VA and quite a bit of finishing austerity.
