THE ULTIMATE OUTSIDERS WINE
In 1991, Jean-Luc Thunevin purchased his first vineyard in St. Emilion. While the vines of the estate were of suitable age, 30-40 years old, the property itself was not highly thought of in historical rankings. Yet, through sheer will power or skill, depending on your view point, Jean-Luc has brought Château de Valandraud on to the world stage as a wine to be reckoned with...and a price to match! Round about the mid-1990s Virginie de Valandraud, named after Jean-Luc and his wife Murielle daughter, was initially designed as a second label to Valandraud. Since 1997, a second label it is no longer. The wine is made from selected lots and vinified in the same way as Cheau de Valandraud.
Virginie de Valandraud originates from a 4.5 ha vineyard consisting of clayey-limestone, sands and gravels. The grape varieties are planted to 70 percent Merlot and 30 percent Cabernet Franc. Vine age here is 30 plus years. The wine is aged in 100 percent new oak. Case production is but a 800-850 cases per year.
