Tasting note from this lot: Upon meeting my charming host I was welcomed into the home with a wonderfully rare tasting opportunity, a glass of 1982 Haut Brion blanc. Admirers of this Château know the rarity of such an opportunity, so little is ever offered for sale as to make the wine more a myth than a tangible experience! The color is radiant, star bright, youthful, pale straw yellow with green accents as one holds it up to the light. We had just opened the bottle and warmed it in our hands to proper drinking temperature. The '82 is as reluctant as a child visiting the dentist. In time it opened and revealed that citrusy-nutty quality that only aged Bordeaux whites can deliver. Soon the talk of paring it with oysters was at hand...The aromas translated well to the pallet where much of the same was repeated but now a bees wax aroma and finish on the palate. The wine is firm with balanced acidity, well structured and integrated in every way. You would be hard pressed to estimate it's age. There is great viscosity and length to the wine. An absolute marvel to sample. As we spoke, we finished the bottle I might add, I learned more about the collection and tastes of my host...soon to follow the '82 blanc was an '85 Mouton Rothschild waiting in the wings...it too was marvelous. The preference, if I may be allowed to speak on my host's behalf, is for dry wines of complexity, balanced in every way a wine should be. The wine should be able to age and gain additional nuance. My host is a kindred spirit in matters of wine taste. The storage conditions are of the very best in quality, 70 humidity, 53 degrees temperature and constant. Everything inspected is from excellent storage conditions having been purchased on released and only recently moved for the sale. ST

From Michael Broadbent's Vintage Wine: "Successful vintage for dry white Bordeaux and the top wines are certainly worth pursuing. An impressive powerful wine [in May 1983] though clearly needing considerable bottle aging. A 'wonderful mouthful' in 1990, 'will develop further'. Indeed after nearly ten more years, thought still fairly pale, a magnificient bouquet, fragrant, nutty, opening up in the glass like a great Montrachet, pineapple, vanilla, peaches. Last noted at a pre-sale tasting in London, Jan 1999 ****(*)."
