Lot Essay

The present lot is a wing of an altar dedicated to the Virgin. The centerpiece, possibly representing the Glorification of the Virgin, was in all likelyhood carved. The representation of Saint Mary Cleophas and her family was probably the panel on the extreme left when the altar was closed. The panel on the extreme right depicted a scene with Mary Salome. On the other two wings the Holy Family and Saint Anne and her three husbands would have been depicted. When the altar was opened, the wings showed scenes from the life of the Virgin, among others the flowering of Saint Joseph's rod (see following lot).

We are grateful to Dr. Peter van den Brink for his help in cataloguing this lot.
