Lot Essay

The composition of the present lot is based on the painting by Hans von Aachen, formerly in Saint Michael's church in Munich, destroyed during World War II. This picture was commissioned by the Jesuits before 1596. Two other versions are known; one by Von Aachen and workshop (oil on panel, 46 x 38.8 cm) in Städtische Kunstsammlungen, Augsburg; the other, a copy (oil on copper, 47.3 x 32.6 cm) in the Narodni Galerie, Prague.
