Lot Essay

In the past it has been assumed that this vessel was a 19th century copy, however archaeological excavations have unearthed similar vessels ; see Henkes, 1994, p. 154 nr. 35.7- 35.8.
Passglas vessels were used during drinking games, whereby the paricipants became extremely intoxicated since they had to drink exactly from one ring or Pass to the other which was nearly impossible and had to start over and over again. It can thus hardly be a surprise if these vessels are commonly depicted on 17th century brothel, inn and peasant scenes.
