Christie’s charges a premium to the buyer on the H… Read more THE ELISABETH OSTHOFF GLASS COLLECTION, BIELEFELD Elisabeth Osthoff, was born in 1918 in the lively industrial Westphalian town of Bielefeld, being in the centre of art collectors such as Rudolf August Oetker. She was trained as a sculptor at the Academy of Arts in Berlin and was a member of the 'Künstlergemeinschaft Klosterstrasse' together with prominent artists such as Käthe Kollwitz, Werner Heldt and Hermann Blumenthal. Together with her husband she started collecting and trading fine arts especially of the Moyen Age and after his death in 1958, Elisabeth continued the business. She not only had excellent connections with various German and European museums but also with the Corning Museum of Glass in upstate New York. Privately she managed to collect glass with an almost encyclopaedical sense of overview and a deep feeling for quality. The fragility of glass fascinated her, because she felt it was closely related to her own very sensitive personality. She may well be considered rare as a lady collector in a gentleman's world of glass collecting. Sadly Elisabeth Osthoff passed away in January 2007 in Bielefeld. BIBLIOGRAPHY Seyler, 1895 G.A.
