Although more subdued in tone than some of Swanzy's Cubist-inspired landscapes, this picture has a warmth, delicacy and sense of harmony. A landscape of brown and violet trees, rocks and stone farmhouses, set amongst green fields, is intersected by delicate lines and arcs, like tendrils falling from the trees, to create a sense of glowing transparency and distance. Influenced both by Cézanne and the Cubism of Delaunay, and perhaps the abstraction of Victor Pasmore, Swanzy seems to unite both surface pattern and a sense of depth.
