GOSSE, Henry Philip (1810-88). Actinologia Britannica. A History of the British Sea-Anemones and Corals. London: Van Voorst, [1858-] 1860. 8°. Half title, chromolithographed frontispiece, errata slip for part III tipped-in before preface, 11 plates, all but one coloured (margins of half title a little browned). Publisher's cloth, lettered in gilt on cover and spine (gutter split at pp. 208/209, front cover damaged at lower edge). Provenance: 2 AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED BY GOSSE tipped-in at front (one 3 pages, dated Sandhurst, Torquay, July 30th 1878, the other 2-pages, Sandhurst, Torquay, Sept. 16, 1878), in which Gosse thanks a supplier in most effusive terms for an insect cabinet. As a token for his gratitude Gosse asked his publisher to send a copy of Actinologia Britannica to the supplier.
