A RARE SIGNED RHINOCEROS HORN LIBATION CUP
SIGNED WITH THE MAKER'S MARK, YOU YUYUAN
Finely carved with an extensive continuous river landscape depicting a figure steering a sampan through breaking waves towards a fisherman standing in the water, hauling his net out of the flowing water, all surrounded by rockwork and overhanging trees, including an elaborate willow which forms the handle at one end, the boughs of the pine tree continuing over the rim, the horn of a warm honey colour becoming paler at the mouth rim

Lot Essay

You Yuyuan, also known as You Tong, lived at the end of the Ming dynasty. There are only three know works attributed to him, all of which are raft carvings. An example of a signed raft carving by this artist is illustrated in Weng Wango and Yang Boda, The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Bamboo, Wood, Ivory and Rhinoceros Horn Carvings, The Commercial Press, Hong Kong, 2002, pl. 119.
The current lot is very rare in its subject matter in relation to this artist.
