A PAIR OF RARE YELLOW-GLAZED WINE CUPS
UNDERGLAZE BLUE KANGXI SIX-CHARACTER MARKS WITHIN A DOUBLE CIRCLE AND OF THE PERIOD (1662-1722)
Each delicately potted with steep, slightly rounded sides rising from a short straight foot to a slightly flaring rim, applied with archaistic dragon handles, the exterior with a narrow band of shallow-relief archaistic dragons between thin raised bands, the exterior all under an even pale yellow glaze stopping neatly around the foot and rim, the interior and base glaze white

(According to an old inventory, possibly prepared at the time of George Warre's death, these cups were previously in the Bennett and Harrison Collections, but this is not mentioned in the 'black books').

A cup of this design is in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Kangxi Yongzheng Qianlong, Hong Kong, 1989, p. 164, pl. 147; while another is illustrated by R. L. Hobson, The George Eumorfopoulos Collection Catalogue, vol. V, London, 1927, pl. LXV, no. E270. Two other cups are included in the Illustrated Catalogue of Ming and Ch'ing Monochrome in the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art, London, 1973, no. 567 (6.8 cm.), illustrated in pl. III together with a cup stand (6.8 cm.); and no. 503 (7.6 cm.). One of the pair of cups was also included in the International Exhibition of Chinese Art, Royal Academy of Arts, London, 1935-6, illustrated in the Catalogue, no. 2685.
