Lot Essay

This design is related to the jars and dishes ordered for the St. Augustine Monastery in Macao which was founded in 1589; the double-headed eagle is absent on the present dish but the border designs are very similar. A very similar dish to the present lot was sold Sotheby's London, 8 November 2006, lot 39.
