Lot Essay

The present lot shows Roberto Cunninghame Graham (1832-1936) on horseback in Hyde Park. 'Don Roberto', as he was known, was an author, M.P. and horse-trainer. Joseph Conrad, with whom he was friends, said of him 'when I think of Cunninghame Graham, I feel as though I have lived all my life in a dark hole without seeing or hearing anything'.

Towards the end of his career, Hunter did various drawings in Hyde Park, of which the present lot is an example.
