Lot Essay

Alexandra Gardner studied at the Glasgow School of Art bewteen 1963-8 under David Donaldson who was a source of great inspiration to her. She taught at the Art School until the late 60's when ill health forced her to retire. Her paintings encompass a wide range of subjects: still life, figure and portrait studies, the nude, landscape as well as her hallmark moody bars, diners, restaurants and barbershops. Her work has been described as having 'wit, an understanding (of her subject) that allows her to give sympathy to the grotesque, edify ... and amuse, all at the same moment'.

Her work can be found in many public collections including the Glasgow Art Gallery, the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh and the Glasgow Fine Art Society.
