Lot Essay

"At the Mudd Club, Basquiat meets Diego Cortez, an artist and filmmaker, who knows people within and outside of the East Village Club scene. cortez takes a liking to Basquiat's work, sells some drawings, and eventually shows the work to art dealers. He also formally introduces Basquiat to Henry Geldzahler, who becomes a friend and early collector of Basquait's art.
(Franklin Sirmans, Jean-Michel Basquiat, New York 1992, p. 237)

Please note that lots 416 and 417 were also exhibited at the Mudd Club with the present lot. The Lower Manhattan Drawing Show at the Mudd Club immediately followed up on the seminal New York/New Wave show at P.S. I earlier in February 1981.
