Of Latin cross design set with foiled table-cut garnets and central line of colourless pastes in silver-gilt mount, circa 1790

This Is Portugal's highest Order and is unusual in that it could be awarded by two nations, the Vatican and the Republic of Portugal. The order was founded in 1318 by King Denis and confirmed by Pope John XXII, abolished in 1910 but re-established in 1918.
