Lot Essay

The cufflinks were presented to Stan Laurel and the charm bracelet to his wife, Ida, after the This Is Your Life show which featured Laurel and Hardy, filmed on 1st December 1954. The significance of the chosen months and positioning of the small diamonds on the cufflinks indicate Laurel's date of birth (16th June 1890) and date of marriage to Ida (6th May 1946), the charm shows the date of the This Is Your Life show.
It has been said that both Laurel and Hardy were very surprised and a little put out to be on the show without prior knowledge. Laurel is quoted as saying ...we never dreamed that we would make our television debut on an unrehearsed network program... I was damned if I was going to put on a free show for them.. Although in later years, after so many adoring fans had told him how much they had enjoyed the show, he became less resentful.
