Lot Essay

Santos Crispín and Crispiniano were twins who were martyred for their faith by the governor of Belgic Gaul, Rictus Varus, around 286 AD. The saints had left their noble Roman family to preach Christianity to the Gauls and, to earn a living, made shoes by night. They are considered patron saints of cobblers, tanners and leather workers. The saints's feastday is especially noted in William Shaskepeare's play Henry V in the speech given by the king before the Battle of Agincourt which occurred on 25 October 1415.
