Lot Essay

The saint is usually pictured with her attributes-- a palm in her right hand and, a tower where she had been imprisoned, in her left hand. An early Christian martyr, Saint Barbara was put to death by her own father who beheaded her for her beliefs. Shortly after her death, he was struck by a bolt of thunder. As the story spread, the martyr was invoked at times of thunderstorms, fire and sudden death.
