Lot Essay

'Capillaire' was a clear syrup flavoured with maidenhair-fern (Capillaris herba) or orange-water. There were capillaire societies, convivial social groups which took place around drinking this cordial. A similar glass sold Christie's King Street, 15th February 1995, lot 61.
