Lot Essay

Having studied under Bonnat in Paris, Ellis travelled widely in Cyprus, Asia Minor, Egypt and the Middle East, painting what was to become the greater part of his work. Originally from London, he started his career as an engineer on the District and Metropolitan railway, and returned to his native city to paint subjects such as this, which is offered in a contemporary frame.
