Lot Essay

In 1882 Ruskin was travelling with W.G. Collingwood. They were in Annecy from 16-20 September and again from 13-15 November. The weather was dull, poor and overcast for almost all of both visits. However on the 13 November Ruskin noted in his diary 'steady clearing [of weather] in afternoon gave me cloudless Tournette and hills of southern Annecy'. Presumably this is when the present drawing was executed.

We are grateful to Dr James S. Dearden for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
