Lot Essay

During his life Koch painted only 8 small still lifes with fruit, all during the period 1944-1946. All these works have a very similar and intimate composition. The fruit is presented directly on a ledge, with a low horizon. As well as the fruit still life by Caravaggio as early 17th Century Dutch still lifes served as examples for Koch's still lifes. The nail in the wall, an old trompe l'oeil trick emphasizes the realistic effect of the work. In this sophisticated and elegant "portrait" of a white plate with lemons Koch shows his unsurpassed skills of artistic talents
