Lot Essay

The beautiful flower-festooned golden clock, designed in the 1740s French 'picturesque' fashion, evokes the triumph of the Arts of Peace represented by genii led by the Sun and poetry deity Apollo. The Arts and Sciences, personified by music-making youths and their telescope-bearing companion (now lacking the telescope) accompany a poetic pastoral trophy of musical instruments; while the clock's pillar and 'sarcophagus' plinth display flowered trellis cartouches. The model was first executed by the Parisian bronzier Jean-Joseph de Saint-Germain (d.1791) following his establishment in 1741 in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine. (H. Ottomeyer/P. Proschel et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986 , fig.2.8.10).
