Broadsheets (709 x 536mm). Engraved calligraphic title by Vincent after Tomkins and 16 engraved plates by Anthony Cardon after Joseph Ruyssen. EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with an engraved plate by Cardon after Ruyssen 'Raphäel d'Urbino' after 'the original at Roehampton in the possession of the Earl of Bes[s]borough', London: Joseph Ruyssen, 1 January 1800. (Title slightly marked and creased, occasional light spotting or marking, one plate with short tear affecting image.) Contemporary English half calf over marbled boards, spine gilt in compartments and lettered across 4 (extremities a little rubbed, minor cracking on joints).

RUYSSEN'S RARE SERIES OF PLATES, EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH A PORTRAIT OF RAPHAEL. Brunet, Graesse and Lowndes all call for fifteen plates, stating that the work was issued as a series of three fascicules between 1798 and 1801 (which, as the title states, depict the cartoons at Windsor); this copy has Cardon's engraving of Ruyssen's copy of Raphael's self-portrait in the Bessborough collection bound in after the title as a frontispiece to the collection. RARE: no copy can be traced in ABPC since 1975, nor in UK libraries apart from the National Art Library. Brunet IV, col. 1113; Graesse VI, p. 28; Lowndes p. 2036.
